Anne McKenna starts at the Capital and immediately gets assigned to the Metro division under the wing of the experienced reporter Redmond Dunne. They attend a bank raid and she gets an exclusive in an unauthodox way, endearing her to Redmond and her editor, Clay Gibson. Later she helps get charges against the Bank Manager dropped when he reveals to her that there were no bullets in the gun he used to subdue the armed robber. The story makes the front page and she gets her first By-Line.
Mary Ward is accused of sleeping with a Senator's aide in order to get a story and is pushed into allowing her source to go public in order to refute the claim and get the story published. It becomes the main front page story.
Dory and Hasky attend a Nursing Home fire which they discover is owned by Ray Chumley, a slum lord that Redmond Dunne had previously exposed and had had disqualified from property ownership a year ago. Despite Clay's instructions to the contrary Dory helps Redmond to link Chumley to the fire and to multiple building code violations thereby bringing Chumley to justice and producing a last minute front page story.
Miles Plato steps on toes at the Pentagon when he endeavours to expose a career General's plastic surgery but falls on his feet when the General willingly speaks about the surgery and offers to become a future gossip source for Plato within the Pentagon itself.
Conrad White and veteran reporter Alexander Streeter, who is determined to re-establish his reputation and avoid retirement, inadvertantly take on the same story - drugs in the Rutherford Project. Initially they clash but eventually begin to work together until Streeter misjudges the mood of the local youths and is shot. Suddenly retirement seems more appealing.
Edison King attempts to edge Todd out of National and into Business hoping to attract Conrad White to the vacant position. When Conrad rejects the offer Edison is forced to backtrack.
At the end of a long day Dory invites Anne to stay the night at the house she shares with Redmond, Hasky, Todd and their dog "Food", despite her own feelings for Redmond and her uneasiness about Anne working closely with him.
